“How Can We Build Community in Humanism?”
Presented by Richard Dowsett, Concept by Michelle Edmunds
A brainstorming and ideas session for Humanists and friends.
Though many of you know HAT only through this Saturday discussion group, The Forum, HAT is a Canadian Registered Charity with a mission to “Grow Humanism, a secular, rational and compassionate world view through education, connection and community involvement”.
One of the best ways to “grow Humanism” is to build a strong community. The idea is that this strong community will empower us to live and enact the values of Humanism individually and as a group for the benefit of ourselves and of our society.
Today’s central questions: What attributes make a community strong and how can Humanist communities like HAT develop these attributes?
According to ChatGPT, these are some of the core attributes of a strong community:
Shared Values and Purpose: Common Vision and Core Values
Inclusivity and Diversity: Welcoming Environment and Open-Mindedness
Strong Relationships: Trust and Mutual Respect and Collaboration
Engagement and Participation: Active Involvement Leadership and Initiative
Effective Communication: Transparent Communication and Openness to Feedback
Resilience and Adaptability: Problem-Solving Capacity and Conflict Resolution
Celebration of Identity and Culture: Sense of Belonging and Rituals and Celebrations
Some Questions:
Which of these attributes is key to building a stronger community?
Are there any attributes missing from this list?
Is a strong community focused on serving needs? Are all of the above attributes actually needs-based at their core?
What place do holidays and traditions have in creating stronger Humanist communities?
What could be special about a Humanist Thanksgiving? the Winter and Summer Solstices? World Humanist Day?
